Pets

Puppy

Pets add companionship, loyalty, pleasure, and sheer fun to your life. The City of Hopkins regulates pets so that everyone can enjoy animals safely and without annoyance.

Animal license

The City of Hopkins requires that your dog have a license as soon as it is six months old. A dog with a valid license from another jurisdiction must obtain a Hopkins’ license within three months. Proof of spaying or neutering, a rabies tag number, and an expiration date of a rabies tag must be shown before a license is issued. View Hopkins City Code Chapter 6 (PDF).

Quantity Limits

Section 6-27 of the Hopkins City Code states that no person shall keep, harbor or maintain in any individual dwelling unit within or upon the property within the city more than four animals over the age of six months. This includes any combination of dogs, cats, ferrets, reptiles, birds, etc., but not more than three dogs and does not include fish. Animal shelters, veterinary hospitals, and humane societies are exempt from this prohibition.

Benefits

Licenses are inexpensive, easy to get, and good for your dog. If your dog is lost, a City license helps to locate the owners. A license also ensures that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies.

License Period and Pricing

Under no circumstances can the license period extend beyond the expiration date of the rabies vaccination. Exceptions to the license fee will be made for service dogs if proper paperwork is provided.
